BLACK IS ACE EVALUATION
Looking at themes of displacement within the African diaspora, FUBUNATION question how can one’s sense of identity escape the mental state of never really belonging in a western world? Black Is… confronts imperialist social structures and honours the collective heritage black people share whilst highlighting diversity amongst black communities.
In a quest to find home, the bodies in Black Is… bindingly move across the space in a synchronized and hypnotic dance. Their physicality displays a visceral strength and vigour yet yields to a profound vulnerability. Accompanied by a rhythmic soundscape, the dancers rarely leave each other’s side as if home wasn’t after all found on land but in community.
